As part of an ongoing, multi-million-pound investment currently being made to rejuvenate and expand one of the South West’s biggest markets, St. Austell’s Cornish Market World, the site’s management is inviting members of the public to suggest innovative ways that its 3-hectare field can be put to better use for the local community.
Known as the East Field, aside from a few events which take place every year, the green space is heavily under-utilised. Andrew Robertson, director with WMC Retail Partners Plc, the company responsible for the Cornish Market World site commented: “Having such a wonderful green space running alongside our market and family play facility presents us with some fantastic opportunities.”
“We’ve already got some outline ideas for the site, such as creating a visitor centre that focusses on nature and wildlife – perhaps creating an eco-park, or an environmentally-conscious camping and events space that could be used by the local community?
“We’d like to hear from any members of the public, interest groups, charities, societies or even companies who may have good ideas that could provide a worthwhile use for this green space. It’s important to note that whatever happens, this space must stay ‘green’ and continues to offer habitat for flora and fauna.”
Following an independent body of research carried out in various Cornish towns on behalf of the market in January of this year, it was found that 86% of those surveyed felt that the market is a vital part of the local community.
“We want to increase the roll that the market plays within the local community and seeking initiatives for it to use the field seems a logical step for us.” Andrew Robertson added. “Our development plans for the market itself include for the creation of a new ‘community square’ where we’ll be able to host indoor events, so with the additional ideas for extending this space into the East Field will provide us with opportunities for all-year-round community engagement.”
The company’s plans for the rejuvenation of the market were announced earlier this year and include the creation of a brand new farm shop and two further retail units that form part of a completely new façade for the market’s dated exterior. Inside, all new market stalls will be constructed, along with the community square and area for pop-up style retailing – including regular themed markets such as Creative Cornwall – an initiative which provides incubator space for local artisans and crafters.
